5 of the top 6 factors that decide where you rank in Google UK when someone does a search for your service or product are now social. Of the more traditional SEO methods, only back linking remains in that top 6.
The findings were uncovered by SearchMetrics. The search analytics firm studied a total of 10,000 top keywords, 300,000 websites and millions of likes, shares, tweets and backlinks. They then aggregated literally billions of data points to discover exactly which factors effected the rankings of those keywords in the Google UK search results.
Reasons Your Business Needs To Be Social
As well as helping your web site to rank well in the search engines, you should also consider a social media marketing campaign because:
Social proof is now a major part of the buying process – People trust their friends and value their opinions. On my Facebook page in the last week alone I’ve had someone asking if anyone knew whether the Italian in Laxey was authentic or not and another asking if anyone could recommend a good Douglas B&B. 78% of us trust peer recommendations while only 14% trust advertisements.
You can profit from a social following even without search engine traffic - Announcing a special event such as a sale to your followers brings instant results.
The amount of followers is relevent to your location - Smaller companies who are targeting local consumers are put off social media marketing because they believe either their business or their market here on the island is too small but that’s not the case. When you update your Facebook page not only do the folk who are following you see it but so do their friends.
The average Facebook user has 245 friends but even if we’re conservative and put that number at just 100 it still means your update has the potential to reach 10,000 people, the majority of which will be living here on the island.
If you don’t use social media marketing, your competitors soon will – Social media is here to stay and shows no signs of slowing down. It took 4 years for internet users to reach 50 million, it took Facebook less than a year to reach 200 million active users and it’s still growing. If it were a country it would be the third biggest in the world.
The ROI of social media is your business will still exist in 5 years.
